Located in Chugiak, experience the snowy, forested trails of Anchorage’s most vibrant mushing community as you glide along with a seasoned sled dog racer as your guide. On your way north to Talkeetna, Denali, Hatcher Pass, or the Matanuska Glacier? This is right on the way. Limited availability, only twenty minutes north of downtown.

Reluctantly pacing while pulling on the line
Harnesses jingling, they’re biding their time
Breath in the cold like smoke from a gun
Every last muscle is loaded to run
They’re itching and leaning
Straining and dreaming
Of wide open white under pale winter sun
The call finally cracks through the crystalline air
A snap of the lead and they’re suddenly there
Paws hit the powder in perfect accord
A thunder of fur with a single accord
They fly down the trail now
No thought of the how now
Just rhythm and instinct and overdrive vow
Because they want the distance
They crave every mile
Paw prints struck fast in a bold single file
They’re chasing the horizon
Where cold rivers freeze
With the wind in their ears and a drive that won’t ease
Tongues rolling sideways, eyes shining bright
Living for motion, for pull, for the ride
Of runners on ice and the hiss of the sled
The trail unspools pink and blue up ahead
No finish could hold them
No boundary fold them
They run for the joy that the wild has told them
They want the distance
They live for the run
For the snap of the traces and glare of the sun
Through forest and tundra
O’er drift and through bend
They run not to arrive —
But to run without end.
